That adage “Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it” gets thrown around a lot when it comes to personal safety, specifically firearms. While that sounds logical, it is a bit short sighted.

No lock is foolproof. Even the best locks can be picked or bypassed. But a decent lock can make it enough of a hassle for a thief that they’ll move on to an easier target.

True safety is a myth. We can’t completely eliminate all threats, but we can make them less likely to happen and less harmful if they do. The key is to layer safety measures, like putting on multiple layers of clothing in cold weather.
