Two-factor authentication (2FA) might seem like a hassle, but it can make it much harder for attackers to get into your accounts. Even if they can guess your password, they’ll still need to get into your phone or authentication app. It’s not foolproof, but it’s definitely worth enabling for your most sensitive accounts.
Two-factor authentication usually works in one of two ways:
- You’ll receive a code via SMS or voice to your cell phone number.
- You’ll use an authentication app like Google Authenticator.
The authentication app uses a key that was shared previously and the current time to generate a code. The site you’re trying to log into will have the same key and will generate the code as well. Since it’s based on time, the code is constantly changing, making it harder for an attacker to guess.
